Leskovac does not have a historical coat of arms. Natural and continuous development of medieval heraldic science and the application of the principles were interrupted by the Ottoman invasion in the 15th century. In the 70’s of 20th century the emblem of the municipality of Leskovac was adopted. That emblem was one of better heraldic solutions of that period. A valid coat of arms of the municipality of Leskovac was adopted on March 12, 2005.

The coat of arms evokes the historical and cultural heritage of Leskovac. Blue is the color of heaven, holiness, water and peace. The current emblem of Leskovac has a blue base. Blue, whose antique name was "moravo", alludes to the name of the Morava River, whose basin was hydrological backbone of southern Serbia.

The golden color is the color of holiness, immortality, stability over time. The cross of double-braided cord has a double meaning: the cross is a symbol of suffering and resurrection, a symbol of civilization that we belong to, and the rope reminds us to the emergence of the rope and cord production which led to the development of specific trade and industrial physiognomy of Leskovac. The cross is also a symbol of the crossroads. Leskovac as a town and trading center, the center of the crossroads and the place crucified on cross of suffering in wars, many times resurrected from the ashes of its own execution sites. The golden nuts of the hazel tree allude to the toponym of Leskovac.

A red double-headed eagle on a silver shield, which can be seen on the flag of Leskovac, recalls the time when Stefan Nemanja won Dubocica from Byzantium. As a special symbol of rulers of Roman Empire, a red eagle is an emblem of despot, sebastokrator, Caesar, and it was used in this way by Serbian rulers of Nemanjic Dynasty until the imperial coronation of Stefan Dusan. Golden ramparts crown with four visible merlons is a part of the standard heraldic repertoire that defines the nature of the coat of arms of the territory and the administrative rang and size of titular; six merlons (four of which are visible) indicate that there are more than 100,000 inhabitants in their territory.

Hemp and hazel tree, as a part of half-wreath surrounding the middle coat of arms, denote the name of the city and the fact that the economy of Leskovac was based on the cultivation and processing of hemp. Hemp was shown in gold in order to highlight the difference between real and symbolic. Lions as holders are based on the heraldic heritage of the region of Leskovac.Apocryphal Coat of Arms Dardanie, which is the wider archaeological and historical framework encompassing the gorge of Leskovac, was popularized by Christopher Zefarovic through his ‘Stemmatographia’, and as such it was part of the coat of arms of patriarchate and it was on the flag next to the right guard of the coat of arms of pavilion of the Serbian Royal House for some time. The lion is characterized by red tincture and black coronet, as well as double tail. The heraldic lion of the Brankovics, which ruled this area for long, is also red. Here his tincture changed to ‘morava’, in other words blue, as an allusion to the confluence of the South Morava. Both lions, the left and right guard resemble the first famous Serbian flag, which is known to have been red and blue, due to their colors.

The coat of arms of the city of Leskovac can be used on three levels: Elementary, Middle and Large. The coat of arms and flag reperesent belonging to the city of Leskovac. They may be used only in the form, content and manner provided by the Decision on the coat of arms and flag of Leskovac.
